CHECLESET BAY SEA OTTERS

Sand and shell were collected from this area to establish the material presence of the otter. This was the location they were first introduced in the 1970's. Brought back from extinction, their fur, the densest of all mammals, 100 hairs per square cm, prevents water from touching their skin. They are constantly grooming themselves to keep the fur from matting up, as would be the case in an oil spill.
